INSEE B.Grimm Solar Begins First-Phase Clean Energy Project, Aiming for Significant Carbon Reduction of 54,000 Tons per Year

2024-09-25

INSEE B.Grimm Solar, a joint venture between the Siam City Cement Group and B.Grimm Power, is advancing the construction of its first-phase solar panels to generate clean energy at the Siam City Cement plant in Kaeng Khoi district, Saraburi province. This project aims to significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 54,000 tons annually.

Mr. Ranjan Sachdeva, Group Chief Executive Officer of Siam City Cement Public Company Limited, emphasized the group's strong commitment to reducing carbon dioxide emissions and increasing the use of electricity from alternative energy sources to at least 50%. The company remains dedicated to conducting business sustainably, ensuring harmony with the community, society, and stakeholders, in line with Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles and its "Caring for the Future" Sustainability Ambition 2030.

As part of a joint venture agreement establishing INSEE B.Grimm Solar, Siam City Power, a subsidiary of Siam City Cement Group, holds a 75% stake, while B.Grimm Power Future Solutions, a subsidiary of B.Grimm Power, holds the remaining 25%. This collaboration aims to develop rooftop and ground-mounted solar projects at the Siam City Cement plant in Saraburi, with an estimated investment of approximately 1.9 billion baht.

Executives from both Siam City Cement and B.Grimm Power recently held a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of construction, which is expected to be completed by April 2025. The plant is scheduled to begin generating electricity for the Siam City Cement facility in September 2025.

"Our domestic cement business targets using 50% renewable green energy by 2030. Previously, we implemented waste heat recovery systems from cement kilns and installed a 4-megawatt solar rooftop. Currently, we utilize 26% renewable green energy. With the launch of this clean energy project, we expect to increase that to 36% by 2025, in alignment with our policy to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and minimize environmental impact," Mr. Ranjan added.

Dr. Harald Link, President of B.Grimm Power Public Company Limited, announced that the joint venture to establish INSEE B.Grimm Solar will begin with the project's first phase, which has a maximum capacity of 83.79 megawatts, capable of generating 117 GWh of electricity annually. The project, expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2025, will also reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 54,000 tons per year. The second phase of the project will further increase capacity by an additional 22 megawatts.

"The collaboration between B.Grimm Power and Siam City Cement Group to develop rooftop and ground-mounted solar projects represents a significant partnership between two leading businesses, driving both the industry and the country forward with modern, clean energy solutions. This initiative also supports operations that are environmentally friendly and community-focused, in line with B.Grimm’s 'Green Leap - Global and Green' strategy to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050," Mr. Link added.

Through this partnership, both companies are committed to delivering clean energy for use in Siam City Cement Group’s manufacturing processes, reducing electricity costs, and cutting greenhouse gas emissions. This collaboration also aligns with and supports the sustainability goals of both companies.
